I LOVE this kid. We watched him win on TV - and right after winning the whole thing - as they were presenting the trophy - he dissed the whole process:
“My favorite things to do are math and music. With the math I really like the way the numbers fit together. And with the music I like to let out ideas by composing notes. Spelling is just a bunch of memorization.”
The presenter then says something like “You must like spelling a whole lot better now, right?” The kid just stares at him for a second as if the interviewer had just said the stupidest thing he had ever heard. Then asks “Are you saying I should like spelling better because I won?” Interviewer: “Yeah. Right?” Long awkward silence. Kid, baffled by this logic, throws him a bone: “Maybe a little.” By his tone, he clearly doesn’t mean it. Brilliant.
Frankly, I think he might be the sanest person I know. I consider him a kindred spirit.
